To all:

A little 'cheery' news on a down day.

Actually its somewhat scary, which makes it cheery for us TAVA types.
A Federal Reserve policymaker, Central bank Governor Susan Phillips, is quoted in todays USA Today newspaper as estimating the cost of the Y2k fix to U.S. companies to be in the 50 billion dollar range.
She further said that the Fed would go so far as to consider the status of a bank's Y2k compliance as a factor in their merger applications.
Phillips said that the diversion of resources (for Y2k) will lead to slower productivity growth and possibly higher inflation.
The article was well-positioned on the front page of the 'Money' section.
