I don't think they should stop Win98, but I think they should really look at how MSFT competes going forward.

Can you imagine what would come out of MSFT if they actually had to work for a living?

I see from your comment that you are not to familiar with the MSFT culture. It's one thing to expect a young programmer with mostly stock options in his compensation plan to work hard for the company, but very senior MSFT executives with net worth in the tens or hundreds of millions still work 90-100 hour weeks. It is the most work-oriented culture I have seen in a big company.

Walt, aside from your gratuitous slap at Microsoft workers for not working hard (definitely untrue!), I agree with your position and have argued that way for some time. All you need to do is to look at what happened when AT&T divested itself of the Baby Bells, a process that has continued through the last few years with the divestiture of Lucent. The increase in shareholder value has been phenomenal because the new companies are no longer constrained by a single corporate culture, but can resume their entrepreneurial paths unfettered by either government or management.
