Mark,
<<The foot print was very small. It was beautiful.>>

Been fooling around with the idea that pc design and particularly the fpd (flat panel display) is the next real demand driver in the industry.
A cheap fpd allows a computer with WindowsCE, Windows98, Java or whatever to be placed almost anywhere and perform single purpose functions or full functions depending on the need.
Coupled with flash memory or a disk drive you now have a truly "install anywhere" machine.

Watching, with great interest, Jobs new iMac and fpd technologies.

Thursday afternoon musings,

Yogi

>To change subject, I got Dell's flier in the mail yesterday. They have a new desktop that I want. It's got a 400 PII, 64M DRAM (100 mhtz), 8.4 gig drive, 4M 3D graphics board, zip drive, etc all for $2499. I don't need a new computer, but this is too cool. By the way, add another 64M of memory for $180. Fast memory is very important to me.

Hehehehe... it's macho customers like you that's made Dell what it is! I'm still waiting for the Toshiba Libretto's price to drop to be competitive with those ubiquitous Pilots... The cheapest model is $700 now.

Re: Your Dell power-box

Here's how I spec that machine:

$900 400 P-II
$100 64 MB SDRAM
$300 8.4 GB
$150 AGP 4 MB 3D vid
$100 Zip
$60 Win95
$140 +all the misc doodads
----
$1750

I guess the difference from Dell is $150 labor for assembly and software installing, $200 in imputed support cost ... the other $400 goes in Michael Dell's pocket <g>.

I have the numbers because I was planning to build one for myself. Decided against it since I could build a 333 Mhz machine for HALF the part cost (albeit without the 100 Mhz front-bus).

God bless,
PX
