Michael, I definitely do not blame all the abuses of mankind on the Christian right. However, since it is the Christian right whose leaders rail against tolerance for homosexuals in America, it is a little difficult to figure out anyone else to blame for this particular abuse. I certainly have an open mind about it, though. Can you suggest someone else to blame?

For example, I was watching "Meet the Press" last week, and Dr. James Dobson, who I believe you said you really liked, was being interviewed. He was complaining that the Clinton administration had a "pro-homosexual agenda". Now it is very clear to me that Clinton supports the basic rights of homosexuals to be in the military, have equal opportunities in housing and employment, etc. But when Dobson is discussing it, he says "pro-homosexual" almost with venom in his voice.

I am really curious what you think that phrase means, incidentally. Are you taking it as meaning that Clinton advocates turning innocent children into homosexuals? That seems to be what Dobson is implying. I have heard you use this phrase, so I am wondering what you mean.

Since homosexual children are being damaged in many ways, as is clear from the article, but only when they are NOT accepted and supported at home and at school, who do you think is doing the damage?

I know that at my daughter's school homosexual children are never harassed, because the children have been educated partially by homosexual teachers, and they have tolerant parents who would never, ever allow their children to be cruel to gay children in any way. Most parents in San Francisco have gay friends and neighbors, and there are no conservative Christian children at my daughter's school to my knowledge. So from my own experience I really believe the kids who are harassing the homosexual children must have heard negative things about homosexuals at home or in their communities. Children don't usually tease unless they have been taught to act that way.

Why did you bring up banning religion, though, when you said "Do you really believe that if we banned religion gay kids would not be harassed by other kids??" I certainly think that is very extreme. I do believe that if the Christian right stopped making anti-homosexual comments however, and stopped preaching that homosexuality was a sin, and stopped fighting anti-discrimination legislation for homosexuals, eventually perhaps homosexual kids might end up very much less damaged.

Incidentally, I read an interesting article today about a private school in Dallas for homosexual, bisexual, and transgendered children, and some straight children who have homosexual parents, but who were made so miserable by teasing in public schools that they could not succeed there. Unfortunately I am unable to copy it here, but it is really nice to see that concerted efforts are being made so that fewer homosexual children fail in school, end up alcohol- or drug-addicted, or kill themselves out of despair.
