DFC, I think we are each using the word "mythology" in different ways. I am using it in the sense that Joseph Campbell used it in "The Power of Myth", as the rich history of belief systems of different cultures on earth. I think you believe I am using it in a more derogatory manner, although I am pretty sure I already explained what I meant. This is from Webster's:

"traditional story of ostensibly historical events that serves to unfold part of the world view of a people, or explain a practice, belief or natural phenomenon; parable, allegory; a popular belief or tradition that has grown up around someone . . ."

The Pope is definitely the leader of the Catholic Church, and was speaking in that context. Regardless of my opinions about him, and also regardless of whether or not the church is all myth, it still plays a role in society as an institution, a very powerful force on the course of history. It is easy to say you do not control the past, only learn from it, but if you do not understand it, then learning might be quite difficult. Are you under the impression that Christians have always acted in really positive ways, historically? It is quite possible to be a Christian and still accept that Christianity has been both a positive and negative force over time.

Promise Keepers are pretty bad news to women who believe that both sexes should be equal, and that men should not dominate families. It is quite an old-fashioned, male-dominant kind of belief system. How do you actually be the spiritual leader of a home, anyway? It seems confusing to me, since spiritual beliefs are individual and internal. Everyone at my house has their own spiritual beliefs. You would probably be pleased to discover that I am not the leader!!
