I hope Jack and jbe noticed and approved of my formal use of the singular pronoun in the first paragraph.

Actually, I generally prefer a construction that sidesteps the his or her (or their) problem altogether. For example, how about rewriting your sentence as follows: "We all have our own bookcases in our room(s) and then, when we are done with a book, it comes to the study for filing on the shelves." ??

Penni,

I hope Jack and jbe noticed and approved of my formal use of the singular pronoun in
the first paragraph.

Noted and approved! But it's beginning to sound "formal" even to me, which says something. I will continue to use it because I've been brainwashed, but few others will. And, as I've mentioned before, the language is changing, and we do have two entirely different forms, the written and the spoken ones. My favorite example: Nobody says "Yes, that was I you saw yesterday." Sure, you can write it, but it's just too damn stiff to say it.

Jack

Do we have a Singular association of Plural dealers ?
=-============
It seems that once a modicum of stability has been achieved they can drop the " D. "

I'm sure the NASD will have the standards.

JUST CAN'T FIND THE RULE ON THIS ONE ! Second sentence, first article ...." I'M SURE ........."
implicit reading a. "..... the Association etc. "
implicit reading b. "..... that the Association etc."
implicit reading c. "..... that NASD etc.
implicit reading d. "..... they,the NASD etc.
Implicit reading e. "..... NASD etc.

Every variation seems wrong ?
