Maxer & Craig, RE: MS the evil empire (Help us reno-wan-kenbobi you're our only hope) <visualize nice caricature with light-saber>

I agree completely with your post. But you see, if Coca-Cola had put Pepsi out of business they would be the evil sugar water monopoly. Since they did not put Pepsi out of business they are a wonder of free enterprise.

If you really appreciate Netscape products, do the right thing and send them a check. If not, what's the problem?

I fully agree with this.

An additional 2 cents on the above:

Borland and Netscape got what they deserved. MSFT did not determine it. We did with our money. Netscape got my money a couple of times. I even paid for a year subscription. The only problem was that they didn't put out anything I wanted that year. Then along come evil Microsoft with IE 4.0 I bought a CD for 4.95, and liked it. Should I feel sorry for poor Netscape who did not meet my growing needs at 10x the cost???? Or should I be happy that I found a product I liked better for 1/10 the cost? It's far from perfect, but it works. I liked it so much I bought stock in the company. <g> MSFT that is...

IMO, Netscape had its market window and it blew it. Borland died of Aston-Tate indigestion. They blew it. So now we will punish the success of MS by getting the government to mess with them? Does this make sense to anybody??

I don't buy the story that MS is the evil empire out rule the world by victimizing poor little Netscape like companies. We are the ones who spend the money on microsoft products. So who created Microsoft?? We did with our $$$$$$$$. I have a few friend who refuse to give any money to MS they go out of there way to buy anyone elses product. I admire their conviction, but do not fully share it.

I vote with my cash, and throughout the years MS has recieved a bunch from me because their products met a need and I have spent many thousands of dollars on MS and non-MS products.

chris

PS We created MS and we can uncreate them with our cash. The question has always been, so who else has the product you want?? VOTE WITH YOUR CASH.

PPS Another example, I used to use Eudora for email now I use MS Outlook 98. Why because it mets more of my needs than the latest Eudora. It is not perfect, but it's better.

Note: It was a few years between Eudora releases, and during that time MS caught up to and passed Qualcomm in product features. Is MSFT blame for Qualcomm's mistake. I don't see how. MS has siezed and maintained the inititive on many fronts, and once they take the lead they don't easily give it up, poor Qualcomm. :(

Good night all!

Craig:

You are misinformed about a couple of things: 1) Microscoft actively steals employees who have valuable trade secretes. 2) It has told computer suppliers it will with hold it's current Win95 product from them if they include netscape. 3) Microscot pays internet service providers to supply IE and will not pay or provide IE if the ISP provides netscape. 4) Gates was so thrilled with the internet that he didn't even include anything about it in the first edition of his 1994 book "the road ahead". He later updated the book when he realized the world had changed and he and Microsoft missed it.

Do you know how much money it takes to litigate against Microsoft? More than the value of an office building in Beverly Hills.
Do you know how much money it would take to successfully introduce and advertise a product in direct competition with microsoft?
More than the value of Utah.

I'm glad you love Microsoft. And I'm glad you send them money for their thrilling programs. And yes, I have bought products from Netscape, but I don't consider their (past) corporate policy (or some of their products) much better than microsoft. But releasing the netscape source code puts them in a very different place.
