CLINTONITES SCRAMBLE to quell Jewish anger over remarks on Israel.

Nervous White House officials phone Jewish groups to gauge feelings over U.S. pressure on Israel to move on peace efforts. Some Jewish leaders blame Secretary of State Albright. "There's a sense the administration may have crossed the line," says the Anti-Defamation League's Jess Hordes. A U.S. official insists, "It's hard to see how this is an ultimatum; we've been at this for over nine months."

Doubts grow that the Monday White House meeting with Netanyahu and Arafat will come off. Much will depend on special envoy Ross's meetings in Jerusalem Friday. Adding to the White House unease Thursday was the timing of the first lady's endorsing a Palestine state and a long-scheduled Clinton meeting last night with an Arab-American group.
