Chip,
The only system I have used is the one between my ears. I started lightening when a bunch of stocks got into the territory where they were, imho, fully valued so I had no reason to stay involved and just took my profits. I have a bunch of investments I still like at this stage but I already have large commitments so decided not to add. Also the combination of Asia and tightening in the US labor market has me cautious about earnings. I've believed that impact would become more apparent in the second half so everything just kind of lined up saying move a little bit to the sidelines. BTW I am not long term bearish and will probably put a large portion of the cash to work in private equity deals over the balance of the year.
I've looked at Elliot Wave, Gann and a bunch of other systems. They all have interesting aspects. The problem is they mess with my instincts. It puts someone else's voice in the back of my head and when it comes time to execute it makes me hesitate and make bad decisions. So I have found over time that what works for me is to do my own research and feel comfortable with what I am doing. The most important factor for me is that I can sleep well and not worry if I missed something.
I don't compare myself to the averages so I can concentrate on my long term objectives. I tend towards value investing where by evaluating fundamentals you can pick long term bargains.
I would be interested in those links, just to see what others are thinking.
