Maxer, RE: MSFT vs Netscape

Thanks for your comments as well. I do really want MS under a lot pressure but under market pressure and not government pressure.

I think Netscape is taking a risk in publishing the source code. They may end up with a better browser than Microsoft could ever build. Or they could end up with a mess. Will be interesting to watch.

Agree that they(netscape) are taking a risk. I REALLY hope that it works out and they put a lot of pressure on Microsoft. I want to have a great browser. IE4.0 is not great. It is just a bit better than Netscape in some areas.

Netscape has always been just a one product company, but the street hyped them as serious threat to MS. Well, it worked and Bill turned MS on a dime and 6-12months latter MS was an 'internet' company. I strongly feel that Bill did an amazing thing. He missed the wave of the internet, had a revelation, then paddled like hell and now MS is riding it. I know a product manager at MS and we have talked about this a couple of times. He lived at MS for those months. MS has a barbarians at the gates mentality.

JMO,

Chris

I think you should also consider it was Netscape's giving away their browser in the beginning that stopped most of the other little companies that were developing browsers (their pockets were deep and they couldn't develop it for free)... sounds kinda like what Microsoft pulled on Netscape...

Maxer..It is ironic that MSFT's OS is dependant on a product that was reverse engineered because the owners of the original BIOS wanted to charge too much for the right to use it. Read your screen when it boots and you will see Phoenix Technologies flash across it. They have become rich simply because greed got the best of the original BIOS developer. MSFT could fall prey to the same thing if they choose to charge too much for their products and that is what will keep them from ever charging extreme prices. Steve

Why on earth would Netscape give away the source code to their bread-and-butter product. That sounds to me like a formula for disaster.

By the way, does anyone know how the Tandem transition went at Compaq? I can't believe the DEC one will go smoothly if they are going to axe 15,000 people.
