McDuck, re <<Let's get this thread back on topic, please.>>

How about picking the "best" stocks for the upturn (whenever that may be). Going back to the roots of Cary S's approach and the "magnificent 8(7)" one can start with that list. These companies have in common that they are relatively big and are in Silicon Valley:

AMAT, NVLS, LRCX, SVGI, KLAC, UTEK, EGLS

To these one could arguably add ETEC (also in Silicon Valley, but a different kind of play maybe), PLAB, DPMI, TER and, perhaps, PRIA and KLIC. "Relatively big" being the theme here.

Of course, arguments in favor of "small-clever" etc would be welcome.

PB

No problem. I will post over there from now on. I didn't even know there was a topic of that title. Let's keep the Asian conversation going over there. It has been very interesting and could prove to be significant in the coming months.
Thanks,
MikeM(From Florida)

<<Let's get this thread back on topic, please. >>

Or as the captain of the Titanic said, "You people stop talking about icebergs and get back to navigation, please." Or in other words, would you please explain to me why AMAT is laying off employees without mentioning the economic situation in Asia?

The situation in Asia has been the #1 factor in the price of any semiconductor equipment stock for the past 6 months. Sitting around talking about "which issues to buy" to take advantage of the coming rally, without considering Asia, is meaningless. Unless and until the more important Asian economies recover to the point where they are able to afford purchases -- both end user products as well as the semi equipment per se -- there isn't going to be any rally.

The situation in Asia is not getting better, but I won't bore you with the details. You will please note the price of semiconductor equipment issues is also sinking again.

A significant drop in the Dow, together with continued intransigence to economic reform in Japan and Korea, and political instability in Indonesia, would cause a huge additional retrenchment in every one of these stocks. If you want to ignore this possibility, go ahead, but don't blame people who are concerned with it.
