HP MAY DROP EMBEDDED ...
Big changes may be cooking for the embedded computing business. Why? Because Hewlett-Packard may be in the midst of a major strategic shift. While HP denies it's getting out of the embedded-computing business, observers see it divesting businesses that don't enhance its position as an enterprise-computing company. They called HP's offloading of its embedded design group a de-emphasis on embedded, noting that HP shopped the group around before cutting a deal with Celestica in March. "HP is a $40 billion company that wants to go to $80 billion," says Venture Development's Jerry Krasner. "Even if it took over the entire embedded market, which is probably $4B-to-$5B, that wouldn't get them anywhere near where they want to be." Motorola and Sun stand to gain most from the uncertainty over HP's commitment to embedded. .
