A good question. I don't think we will ever hear a satisfactory answer however, as the power of the Presidency can be very seductive. Of course Clinton brings new meaning to that term. JLA

>>That's what I find most puzzling. Doesn't anyone connected with this administration have any integrity? How can they all just stay there and even defend the indefensible? It's not just puzzling, it's damned depressing. When will someone's conscience make him or her
say, "That's enough!"?

Reason: For most Dems, working in govamint is the best job they ever had or ever will have.

For most Reps, it's often a step down and temporary or a career capper.

The above are generalizations but are borne out by history.

"When will someone's conscience make him or her say, "That's enough!"?"

Rationalization is the second strongest human drive next to sex, IMHO.

Clinton's henchmen are in fifth gear, while Clinton has both his guns abalzin'.

The truth is that if not for the tapes we would have never learned the truth behind Nixon's Watergate. The tapes helped embolden people to come forward and 'fess up. Those tapes helped corroborate their testimony. We don't have the same luxury this time around except for the Tripp tapes which may ultimately have the same effect. We'll just have to wait and see. One thing I'm certain of, though. If not for the Tripp tapes Starr and the rest of us who have known Clinton's true character for years would just be twisting in the wind. The Tripp tapes have provided enough grist to keep the mill turning-hopefully long enough to eventually get to most of the truth. I'm less optimistic about discovering what really happened with Vince Foster and Ron Brown. That's another chapter that could receive renewed life once and if all these other allegations are proven. We can only hope. No wonder people are voting less and less.
