I guess it's a decision of preference when buying cars,
it's also somewhat of a gamble no matter what you buy.

It's kind of experience-related too. When I was growing up all my friends that had GM products usually seemed to get where they were going while those having Ford products seemed to fit the "Fix or Repair Daily" category.

Incidentally my first car was a 1970 VW Bug. Paid $800 for it and had a blast.
First mod was adding an Empi header system.
Second mod was going to a two-barrel manifold and a Holley carb.
Next came the dual-port heads, 1800cc cylinders and dual two-barrel Weber carbs.
Funny how no matter what abuse I seemed to feed it - the engine just kept on going.

I don't know if you guys went through the "Hot Rod" era up there but we sure did.
