One more thing from my notes of the meeting.

When asked about competition for the codec, Alex said the only company with a competing product is Sony, and its chip doesn't yet decode and is of poor quality.

As for style as opposed to substance, Alex is clearly extremely knowledgeable about the industry, and very intelligent. He also lacks the charisma to be digital video's spokesperson. He's a scientist, not a salesman (I too have a degree in physics, so I'm allowed to stereotype.) It would help the stock price if the industry had a spokesperson out there that could get people to stand up and cheer a la Steve Wynn of Mirage Resorts.

Bertelsmann says planned pay-TV link in jeopardy
11:27 a.m. May 10, 1998 Eastern
FRANKFURT, May 10 (Reuters) - The future of the proposed pay-TV alliance between German media groups Bertelsmann (BTGGg.F) and Kirch is not looking bright, a spokesman for Bertelsmann said at the weekend.

''We expect the EU Commission to make a negative decision,'' Manfred Harnischfeger, head of Bertelsmann public relations, told German television.

Previously, Bertelsmann spokesman Helmuth Runde had denied a report in the news magazine Spiegel that the proposed tie-up, which alos includes Deutsche Telekom's (DTEG.F) cable-TV services, had collapsed.

''There is no question of a decision having been reached,'' he said, adding that the Commission had to make a decision by the beginning of June.

''Until this decision is made, the situation remains open,'' he said.
