Less time is not higher speed, it is just less time. Now let see the plane is at 70,000 feet and a satellite is at 500,000 feet. The time it takes for a signal to reach the plane is 70 microseconds and the satellite 500 microseconds, both times intervals will cause delays (which are imperceptible to us humans) but which can easily be handled by electronic means. What is correct however, that a smaller distance, the energy required is decreasing as the square of the distance, and thus direct com from earth based cellular phone need not go through "realy stations". Once more, I do not doubt the technology (while I am not sure yet how they are going to handle weather problems and water vapors or rain interferences) with PLFM, I am worried about their ability to survive to reap the profits available from the technology.

Look at Trilogy (one of Amdhal babies) after going through $100 MM plus of other people money, they went down the drain and they had the best "wafer scale" integration on earth (which Digital capitalized on in their Alpha chip, but not Trilogy's stock holders). Beware of great visions without the financial depth to carry the dream on.
