I believe MSFT has a credibility problem with NT right now. Further, any negative publicity about NT security could damage the markets continued acceptance of NT as a mission critical platform. Signing CHKPF to another 2 year agreement is the best way MSFT can send a message that it's serious about security. Imagine what would happen if MSFT developed their own in-house firewall product and it proved to be less than foolproof. It is absolutely critical that MSFT not do anything that would jeopardize their NT 5.0 rollout, especially with the 98 DOJ problems. MSFT had to sign a top security vendor and they did.
