RICSSON TRIUMPHS WITH EMBRATEL SDH CONTRACT The Transport and Datacom Area from Ericsson in Brazil has signed a contract with long distance carrier Embratel, worth USD 32 million (SEK 243 million). It is one of the Ericsson Group's largest ever Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) contracts. The contract includes the delivery and commissioning of a Synchronous Digital Network at a transmission rate of 2,5 Gbit/s with a total of 195 Network Elements, distributed over a fiber network of more than 15,000 km. The network covers 34 districts in 14 states. The contract includes the integration of 'point-to-point' systems and 'Ring/Bus' topologies. Management systems and the provision of Data Communication capability will be other key features of the network. The network route will include cities such as Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Natal & Fortaleza. Embratel's objective is to link the south of the country to the north with ring topologies. More importantly, the backbone network will make possible the full international integration of Brazil's telecommunication system. Embratel is a subsidiary of the Brazilian Telecom State owned holding Telebras, which operates more than 16 million local lines. Embratel manages long distance and international communications, as well as telex, TV broadcasting, data transmission and maritime mobile radio services. With about 11,5 telephone lines per 100 habitants, Brazil's growth potential is enormous. Telebras will be privatized during 1998 and the forecast shows investments of some 35 billion USD in the modernization of the network by the year 2000 in order to bring the number of lines up to 35 million. According to Luiz Carlos Ferreira de Mattos, chief of the Transport Network Department at Embratel, the Ericsson project has strategic importance for Brazilian telecommunications because it will benefit all the services that are sent abroad through Fortaleza's gate (via submarine cables connecting to USA). "This project will facilitate network operation with ring protection and the increase of new services facilities." "Embratel's objective in developing this network in partnership with Ericsson, is to plan for and anticipate the exploding demands made on telecommunications carriers by the exponential expansion of the Internet and data services," says Mr. Mattos. Another important aspect of the project is that the region covered by the network is part of the route all international calls that pass through Brazil. "Embratel has adopted a network philosophy with a higher number of small rings, which can provide an improvement in the protection level, in accordance with the international requirements on quality." Ericsson will supply Add-Drop Multiplexers and Regenerators. Transmission will be boosted by optical amplifiers, which can reach distances of up to 250 km. Ericsson has been a long-standing supplier to Embratel, selling transmission equipment as well as switching products, for many years now. Based in Horsham, UK, Ericsson Business Unit Transport and Cable Networks has developed, alongside its business partners, a range of technologies to build transport and access networks ready for the broadband revolution. Ericsson offers a full transport networks portfolio for customers such as Embratel. The portfolio includes solutions based on SDH, PDH (Plesiosynchronous Digital Hierarchy), as well as DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing). More than 70 customers in over 50 countries world-wide have already chosen transport network systems from Ericsson. Ericsson's 100,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries. Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones and infocom systems makes Ericsson a world-leading supplier in telecommunications.
