ERICSSON INCREASES DATACOM RATES FOURFOLD FOR SINGTEL MOBILE

Ericsson has signed a contract with SingTel Mobile for solutions to
introduce datacom services at higher speeds over SingTel's GSM
network in Singapore.

This is Ericsson's first contract to implement an evolving
technology called High Speed Circuit Switched Data (HSCSD).

The implementation of new software, scheduled to commence by
year-end, will enable SingTel Mobile Pte Ltd's customers to access
the Internet and other datacom services via the GSM network at
considerably higher data rates than at present.

These services are made possible by HSCSD, which enables wireless
data to be transmitted at 38.4 kilobits per second or even faster
over GSM networks. This is comparable to the transmission rates of
usual modems via fixed telephone networks today.

Current datacom services over GSM generally allows transferring
files or data and sending faxes at 9.6 kbps. With HSCSD the user
will find wireless connection to the Internet much faster at 38.4
kbps, which is up to four times faster than today's standard usage.

"SingTel Mobile's on-going network enhancement plans aim to serve
our customers even better. With faster data transmissions, our
customers will find it even easier and more convenient to use our
Mobile Office offerings," says Mr. Tay Soo Meng, SingTel Mobile's
Senior Director of Engineering. "We believe that mobile phones are
not just a voice communications tool. Increasingly, customers find
that they need to access the Internet and corporate databases or
send faxes while on the move."

Apart from surfing the Internet faster SingTel Mobile's GSM users
will for example be able to send or receive still and video images.
It also opens up possibilities for many new kinds of market driven
wireless services. HSCSD is especially well suited for time
sensitive, real-time services. Examples could be transferring of
large files with specified Quality of Service or video surveillance.

Ericsson's GSM product development is focused on wireless multimedia
services requiring higher data rates. Commercial HSCSD
implementations are important steps towards 3rd generation wideband
wireless multimedia services. Third-generation wireless systems will
handle services up to 384 kbps in wide area applications and up to 2
Mbps for indoor applications around year 2000.

Ericsson's 100,000 employees are active in more than 130 countries.
Their combined expertise in fixed and mobile networks, mobile phones
and infocom systems makes Ericsson a world-leading supplier in
telecommunications.
