JPR:

The US double standard is obvious. India is a well-functioning democracy with a free press, while China is not. Yet, US continues the MFN status for China despite their nuclear testing, while they want to impose sanctions against India. Where is conscience or consistency in US policy? Clinton is personally a conscientious man and so he did not call his Indian visit off. But, he has no room to wiggle through the inconsistent US policies, unless he is prepared to devolve the same arguments as for China that India is too important to ignore.
