What's a country to do????

Tom:

You are right, perhaps not the best use of funds but what is a country to do when faced with extraneous factors that compels them to take certain strategic decisions.

BTW the same argument was put forth by many when India tested its first nuclear device in 1974 and also when India started a Space program to the dismay of many. Actually a lot of rich folks in the West did not approve of it and were laughing about it publicly both in print and on TV and the like. They couldn't stomach the fact that a 'poor','illiterate' third world country could do such things and talked about themselves saying this is all B.S and India could not possibly do it and any serious attempt would fail-Many said 'how dare and could they'??????<VBG>

Tom,
Re:Given that India has a large fiscal deficit, a slowing economy and a significant percentage of the population living in poverty do you think spending large amounts of cash on a nuclear program is the best use of its funds?

Actually, this kind of patronizing attitude of the West is one of the reasons why I think the nuclear tests were a brilliant move. As many of you have pointed out before, people in the West were trying to compare India to Pakistan. Get a grip, India could have anihilated Pakistan even 20 years ago. The real threat to India is China, and those idiots who ruled India in the past (with the exception of Mrs.Gandhi) were fixated on Pakistan. India should arm itself to parity with China. Then the West will take us seriously and stop this disgusting patronizing attitude towards India. They even give more respect to terroristic countries like Syria, PLO etc than India.

Having grown up in India during the 60s and 70s, when we were pretty much self-reliant, I think India will do just fine with the best sanctions, Bubba and his cronies in G7 can come up with.

BTW, Mohan, thanks for starting this thread.

Clayton

Tom, take time and visit Washington D.C. Just few blocks from White House and the Capitol Building you will see hundreds of homeless people sleeping on the grate during cold winter months. Can't NASA take some budget cut to house these people during winter?

Also I believe US has fiscal deficit high.
