-LUCENT: T-Mobil awards $60m wireless equipment contract to Lucent for GSM network expansion

Presswire - May 13, 1998 14:53

M2 PRESSWIRE-13 May 1998-LUCENT: Germany's T-Mobil awards $60 million wireless equipment contract to Lucent for GSM network expansion (C)1994-98 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

Lucent Technologies has just signed a contract worth around $60 million to supply T-Mobil, Germany's largest cellular network operator, with Global Systems for Mobile Communications (GSM) equipment to expand its nationwide D-1 network. T-Mobil's D-1 network currently offers high-quality GSM services to around four million subscribers throughout Germany.

Lucent has been awarded a series of contracts by T-Mobil for GSM equipment. Over the past two years T-Mobile has awarded contracts worth tens of millions of dollars to Lucent as part of its ongoing D-1 network expansion. At the recent CeBIT 98 show in Hannover, Germany, Lucent celebrated the deployment of its 1000th cell in T-Mobil's Hannover network area.

The contract covers amongst others the supply and installation of Lucent's latest products like the compact base station BTS2000/2C and the new basestation controller frame BCF2000. Lucent's products have been designed to provide high capacity and flexibility on small footprints using the latest in technologies. The modular architecture of these products allows operators to cut infrastructure costs by increasing capacity as the network grows.

Neil Whittington, President of Lucent's GSM group, said: "We are delighted to be working alongside T-Mobil through this current phase of its expansion project. We have worked closely with T-Mobil for a number of years and this continuing partnership reinforces our position as one of T-Mobil's leading suppliers."

The equipment will be manufactured at Lucent's new Global Provisioning Centre (GPC) in Nuremberg. The GPC uses the latest, fully-automated production processes which allows assembly and production time to be cut from 15 days to around four. The Centre is designed to offer customers an unprecedented degree of product design flexibility, with improved reaction time.

Lucent Technologies provides GSM systems to network operators around the world. It was recently awarded a US$30 million contract with Portuguese mobile cellular operator Telecel to provide wireless systems and installation services for Telecel's GSM network. Telecel has a majority ownership by US-based wireless service provider, AirTouch, and is Portugal's most successful mobile telecommunications operator. The first phase of the network installation will coincide with the opening of the World Expo Com'98, when millions of visitors are expected to require seamless mobile voice and data services at the Expo site in Lisbon.

Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronic components. Bell Laboratories is the research and development arm of the company. For more information on Lucent Technologies, visit our web site at lucent.com
