Alex, I lean slightly to the right in politics. Hell, my parents were friends of Stevenson and voted for Ike and I still thought of them as liberals. Now this whaler thing. I only have a bass boat with a 225 motor so I ain't going to sea. However if Ish was out there and saw some idiot killing a whale there would be empty 7.62 Garand stripper clips all over.

Alex, I think we have the classical dichotomy based on perception--akin to terrorism vs. freedom fighting--when we talk about in-your-face environmentalism. Many environmentaliists would see the kind of public attention-getting stunts that groups like Greenpeace do as theatre on a grand scale, to attract and keep interest focused on what is happening to the planet. I don't condone violence at all, but see little wrong with anything just short of that, including the amusing occupation of that little island off Scotland by Greenpeace for the purpose of drawing attention to oil drilling in the area. You can even get your own official passport, and Waveland does recognize dual citizenship, so that is very cool. greenpeace.org.uk greenpeace.org.uk I draw very serious distinctions between ramming a boat to stop whaling with no violent intent, for example, and deliberate assassinations of Greenpeace members aboard the Rainbow Warrior by the French government. Would you then call the French terrorists as well? Certainly there are no environmental movements anywhere of which I am aware which intentionally kill people. It really goes against the basic environmentalist philosophy of protecting life. I am sure you know as well as I do that writing letters is not a very effective way to stop a whale hunt in progress. This kind of protest does have a place, but seems to be much more effective on local issues, where politicians are then made aware of their constituents' displeasure. It gets very complicated when international law comes into the equation.
