Shawn, Compaq had an inventory problem. That's all. Compaq covers the whole spectrum of computers from low end to high end. The will continue to do well at the expense of say a Packard Bell. K-6 chips and Cyrix chips offer great value. I wouldn't worry about Compaq not being "100% Intel". The stock is working its way toward 40. Jim

Compaq delivers what people want and need. I am as informed a computer consumer as is out there. I know little, but I know more than 95% of the people out there. Anyway, I bought two compaq computers in the last 6 months. The key was price and basic components. Got a cpq 4504 pentium 200 home computer. It didn't have Cache, but for 30 bucks I could upgrade it to 512. In any event it was a great buy relative to any other machine.. Just bot a 1220 Presario notebook. Great machine for what I need it for at an unbelievable price point.. Once again, no cache, a dual scan display, Nickel metal hi-dri battery, no place removable bay to slip in a zip drive, and no mic though it does have speakers.. Compaq is cutting corners to hit the price points. My notbook has what the average person wants and needs. 200MMX processor (AMD) 32 megs of ram (16 on the board, one slot taken up with 16 meg dim), "large" 12.1 inch screen, 56 bkps modem internal not a card, touchpad, disk drive and CD built into the unit not swapping. These are the things people like and compare when purchasing. Now remember, I am talking about the 80% of buyers, not the top 10%. This machine was available at a price point probably at least 20% below any other pentium 200mmx notebook. Compaq is delivering what people want and need. Home of the $1000 computer and yet able to serve the higher end as well at cut throat prices by using AMD chips and cutting a corner here and there. Maybe not the best machine for those people that are upgrading continually from the day they purchase there machine, but good enough for the other 95% of the people that are buying computers. I didnt buy my two compaq machines because I had too, I bought them cause they were the best bang for my buck and I dont want to pay an extra 20-40% more for things I don't need and I am a reasonably heavy user..
