Brad, a comment and a question:

First the comment. Voice recognition programs, which are now
getting pretty good from what I read, have a command mode
in which you can speak words to perform keyboard and/or
mouse functions regardless of the application running.
These guys can work for browsers or anything else, though
I suppose mouse navigation is hard. Interested users should
check out Dragon Dictate (I think from Dragon Systems) and
IBM's Naturally Speaking. This info is from what I've
read, not from first-hand experience, but I believe it is
more or less accurate.

Second the question: Brad, does the recent silence on possible
thread format options (e.g., what I've called "dialog"
mode) mean those are out or that you're thinking about it?

Regards,

Spots

Brad, Andy, All,

The Lynx text browser has long had speech recognition capabilities. Here's the URL to a Yahoo page containing links to sites for more information about Lynx.

yahoo.com

Opera is an excellent Windows browser which accommodates the visually impaired. All Opera commands are available via the keyboard, although it is mouse-friendly. Its screen font sizes are infinitely adjustable. I do not know if Opera offers speech recognition. Here's a link to Opera's home page.

Brad, The FAQ from the Conversa web site indicates that their IE 4.0 compatible speech recognition browser will work with most links. They indicate some exceptions. Would these exceptions relate to the SI link technology? I guess the big question is would it recognize NEXT?
conversa.com
( the site has been slow at times today)

From FAQ

Q12: What links can I voice?

A12: Convers  Web utilizes a revolutionary speech recognition technology we call CASSI (Convers  Advanced Symbolic Speech Interface). Combined with an effective one million word dictionary, Convers  Web can understand most of the links it comes across. You simply say the links, as you would normally read them.

Q13: Do I have to say the entire link for it to be recognized?

A13: No. In many instances, you only need to say the first few words of a link. When Convers  Web is certain of which link you are talking about, it will immediately take you there, without the need to finish the sentence.

Q14: What about JPEG and GIF images, can I voice them too?

A14: Yes. Convers  Web inserts a special numbered saycon in the upper right corner of the image. To activate the image link, simply say "number" followed by the actual number.

Q15: Are there any links that don't work well with voice?

A15: There are a few. Some Java, Visual Basic, and CGI scripts that contain imbedded links will need to be selected via mouse instead of voice.
Most all other links, whether text or image formats, will be voiceable.

Q16: Which features of the browser are voice-enabled?

A16: Any of the links can be spoken. In addition, image links can be activated by voice, simply by saying the number in the saycon. Also, any of the toolbar icons can be spoken, as well as commands for in-page navigation, like "scroll down".

Try Alt-(left and right arrow keys)

Brad, are the stock quotes on every page real-time or delayed ??

Text enhancements - show options while in the "Response" screen.

Brad,

I've seen the instructions for the various text enhancements somewhere in SI, but request that the options available be seen while one is in the various screens possible to submit a message.

Bold, Larger Fonts, ect..

Thank you,

John F.
