This guy has absolutely no idea what he's talking about. Some of his
comments are debatable but as a whole this is just another example of
internet trash. The most ludicrous of his statements was the "Coffin
Corner" remark. The "Coffin Corner" is a phenomenon in which the pilot of an aircraft at high altitude travelling at high subsonic speed finds himself trapped in a dangerous situation. It works like this; If he reduces his airspeed (either by throttling back or initiating a climb) the aircraft will stall (aerodynamically)
because the low air density at high altitude increases the airplane's
stall speed. On the other hand, if he increases his speed (either by
throttling up or initiating a decent) the aircraft will experience
transonic control problems. While the PLFM aircraft may have stalling risk at its cruise altitude, transonic control problems are simply not possible. At 60,000 ft, the speed of sound is somewhere around 600 mph while the cruising speed of PLFM is probably around 100 mph.
I have a degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Maryland and I previously worked as a systems engineer for the Navy on the A-6E and the F-14 D (I now work as a bond trader on Wall Street).
Of course the PLFM aircraft is vulnerable in certain scenarios. And
maybe the project is doomed by undisclosed or unforeseen technical
problems. But don't listen to people like this. Yes, I am long PLFM but that's not what motivated me to write. Nothing irritates me more than people who speak with authority on matters about which they know nothing.
