I agree that you have excess CPU speed on the desktop. That has been so for some time and will likely continue to be so for quite some time to come.

But consider something like a web server. To make it deal with the largest possible number of requests, you want I/O with negligible CPU overhead. Yes, cache helps for *some* types of access, but it doesn't do a lot for randomized hits that span a few gigabytes.

The 1394 story is a bit ridiculous alright. But what else is there we can use for interfacing consumer devices? USB isn't going to cut it for the devices which require high bandwidth. Of course, there is still SCSI..... :-) I *think* that digital cameras will be a big deal in time. But that time may not be now.
