Without the acceptance or implementation of the dramatic new technology to spur demand-
DVD,ADSL,Cablemodems,Win98?- maybe :), some killer apps,
it seems that production capacity is slightly outpacing demand.Lots of cheap computers are being sold to surf the internet. That's great for web-stocks and some boxmakers are doing OK but new competitors are entering most chip markets looking for profits and are keeping hardware and chip revenues down. Examples would be AMD and Cyrix in mircoprocessors, or the LAN IC's over the past few months( graphic chips a while ago too).I guess businesses and governments having to spend this year to address the Year 2000 problem doesn't help either . And internationally you have the Asian currency crisis, decline in PC sales in Japan ,overcapacity in dram, devaluation of the won,South Korean producers unloading inventories,etc..The whole thing is a big mess right now. Chip equipment ? I wont go into that, it's too depressing. So the combination of competitive pricing and luke warm demand seems to be keeping the skids on things.
Well,I tried but it's really beyond me to make a good analysis of the chip doldrums, that's why I started the thread. I thought it would be interesting to post the figures as they come out and try to at least keep up to date with sales. I think this is a cyclical downturn and am looking forward to the turnaround.
Any comments about chip sales are welcome.
I'm glad you stopped by.
