We do the same thing here with the word "data". "These data show that
blah blah blah..." In latin it's the plural of datus, but big deal.
To me, data is a collection of facts, numbers, statistics, etc., and since it is a collection, is singular. So there! The data are...Oh
I gotta puke.

Yes, I have heard "The orchestra begin..." And the Brits also use some plurals where we use a singular. An English girl lived with our family for several years and always spoke of "the games room" whereas we called it "the game room". They also speak of someone living "in" a named street, while we would usually say "on".
