Ms. Jo-Anne Cappis reports
Alternative Fuel Systems, chosen as one of the main participants in the Sustainable Santiago project in
Chile, has successfully installed its Eagle dual-fuel management system on public transportation buses.
These vehicles are currently being monitored and road-tested, indicating that this pilot project is well
under way and nearing completion.
The main objective of the natural gas conversion project is to improve the transportation system, and
focuses on verifying the technical and economical feasibility of implementing a transportation system
with clean technologies and alternative fuels.
In a second pilot project, the Business Development Centre (Santiago Innova), partner in the Sustainable
Santiago project, has installed AFS equipment to convert trucks of Coca Cola distributor Embotelladora
Andina to natural gas. The National Commission for the Environment (CONAMA) and the Regional
Intendente have endorsed the project, and extend services of the Ministry of Transportation and
Telecommunications emission testing plant. This project is well under way and near completion.
The Sustainable Santiago project is a joint initiative of International Council for Local Environmental
Issues (ICLEI), the municipality of Santiago and the Corporation for the Development of Santiago,
Chile, and is financed in part by the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) Southern Cone
Technology Transfer Fund. ICLEI is the international environmental agency for local governments; its
World Secretariat is in Toronto, Canada.
Successful demonstration of the AFS Eagle natural gas conversion for these pilot projects will result in a
broad scope of natural gas conversion throughout the entire region. AFS proprietary technology
provides immediate solutions to pollution problems.
