Hi X,

I would basically agree with you except that fouling our nest is somewhat unavoidable and so, with Father T, I think it's equally prudent to plan our departure from it. As for that not occuring anytime soon, well I think the progress we made in the last 30 years has been pitiful compared to the potential that was there.

Environmentalists must have a scapegoat; pointing the finger at corporations is very convenient. Well, corporations are just you and me. It's all well and good to be against clearcutting, just don't take away our paper and wood products I guess. (Or make them more expensive.)

It's been awhile - how is everyone?

Skipper

Hello X, ......I am new to SI and was reading a few post tonight. I came upon yours and read your profile.......I was intrigued by your location........Scotland. I just came home from a Ceilidh. What a time we had. Spent the day with the children at the Highland games. They are celebrated at a Highlander Festival held at a University near my home. The University is named after Edinburgh Scotland. We have had a wonderful weekend....enjoying the history and culture of the events that were held. The Piping competition was among my favorites events of the day. At the Ceilidh, a Scotsman, whom has moved to the states did the addressing of the haggis. What a wonderful job he did with the Robert Burns rendition. Also enjoyed the christening of the kilts.....

I realize my subject is a bit skewed from the recent SI feelings posts.....but feeling great after the Highlander activities......

"Capitalism is a fine thing, but there are some things it is hard to
value. What value do you place on a world with butterflies and birds? What value is
there in a planet whose seas hold whales and dolphins? What value do you place on the
cleanliness of the air and water? What value do you put on a stable society? There are
many intangibles, that are not freely bought and sold in the market place, which make
life more pleasant. Capitalism is, in the end, just a system of distributing "things" based
on competition. In my opinion to make it into one's religion is irrational."

Unfortunately, you miss the morality of capitalism. It is the economic underpinning to liberty and real freedom. It is also value for value, the trader's philosophy. Everything in life falls under the trader's philosophy whether you choose to recognize that or not.

And BTW, the only thing sure in the universe is change -- to think a society can be stable is erroneous and an illusion. It is this trade-off with the federal government for this short-term illusion which is eroding our freedoms. I do not enjoy it when others are willing to trade off my freedoms for their transitory illusions of stability.
