<< Info Tech Briefs; Hyundai, KBS to Co-Develop HDTV

Hyundai Electronics Industries and state-run TV network Korea Broadcasting System (KBS)
have signed an agreement on the joint development of a high-definition television (HDTV)
system.

The two companies intend to develop the system by the second half of next year. The new
digital TV will feature resolution two times greater than conventional analog TV, according to
Hyundai officials.

Hyundai's multimedia research institute and KBS broadcasting technology center already
developed a trial HDTV system earlier this year.

Hyundai and KBS will develop a compression/decompression (CODEC) system based on
the MPEG-2 standard.

The two companies hope their new system will replace imports worth 200 billion won ($143
million). Further, Hyundai Electronics hopes to export new products to the U.S. market

through its U.S. subsidiary, TV/Com Co.>>

<<Info Tech Briefs; SERI Develops VOD System

The System Engineering Research Institute (SERI) has developed a video on demand (VOD)
system based on distributed computing technology.

The system can provide multimedia services using low-end computers or workstations by
connecting to high-speed networks at a speed of 1 gigabit per second (Gbps) or faster.

Unlike other VOD systems, which require high-capacity storage devices attached to a server,
the new system can accommodate a larger number of users at one-fifth of other systems'
costs, the institute said.

SERI's VOD system can offer service to several thousand users simultaneously in real time.

The institute plans to transfer its technology to domestic VOD system manufacturers. >>
