Lucretious....Like every other Bearish poster from the past, you won't be here on this thread by the end of '98.

Best of trading to you in oils...

Regards, George

I have a question for this group. I have few shares of Dell so I'm kind of curious. What's the normal turn on on inventory for Dell. The reason I asked is, I ordered an XPS R400 last Tuesday evening at about 5:00PM. The unit shipped on Friday afternoon. This seems fairly quick to me as I thought I had read that it would take about 6-7 days. The guy on the phone said about a week as well.

If this is now the norm, they seem to have made tremendous strides in their their ability to reduce the number of days from order to shipping. Thanks for any comments. -Keith-

Lucretius, I finally read the article. The funny thing about it is that I delivered a two-part series this past week on "The Fundamentals of Fundamental Analysis", and in the last session I discussed such tidbits as underfunded liabilities, off-balance sheet financing and accounting for executive stock options. I reached many of the same conclusions that were laid out in the Forbes article, but I didn't have all of their data. Just bear in mind that accounting systems are myths that people swear to, so it's easy to conclude that things are not as presented. The challenge is what do you do to make the system more responsive to the needs of the shareholders.

BTW, there was an article not too long ago on using present value accounting in IBD. This is another thing that needs to be looked at. And as a final bit of grist for your "doom and gloom" scenario, look at the differentials between "provison for income taxes" and "taxes paid". Sure, a lot of this is just benign stuff reflecting timing differences between IRS ACRS allowances and GAAP depreciation, but for many companies there is a lot more than meets the eye. Remember Leasco?

TTFN,
CTC -- still very much a Dell Bull !!
