[Metromedia Fiber Network Announces Contract in Excess of $25 Million for Its Transatlantic Joint Venture Ion] ION To Provide Global Crossing With Backhaul Services For AC-1 On Both Sides Of The Atlantic NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 19, 1998-- Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. (NASDAQ:MFNX) announced today that the U.K. subsidiary of International Optical Network, LLC (ION), its joint venture with Racal Telecom of the United Kingdom, has been awarded a contract in excess of $25 million from affiliates of Global Crossing to provide inland capacity services from Global Crossing's Atlantic Crossing (AC-1) undersea cable landing stations in the U.K. and the U.S. The term of the contract is 25 years, the expected life of the undersea cable. ION, through its UK subsidiary, is the only AC-1 inland service supplier that will be providing high-capacity shore-to-city links (also known as backhaul) in both countries. "The AC-1 contract marks the operational launch of ION and illustrates one type of customized network solution which ION can provide by leveraging the parent companies' infrastructure on both sides of the Atlantic," said Howard Finkelstein, President of Metromedia Fiber Network. "By utilizing our state-of-the-art fiber infrastructure in the US and Racal's in the UK, ION is positioned to become a formidable player in the international services market." Under the terms of the contract, ION's UK subsidiary will provide Global Crossing with capacity from AC-1's Land's End cable station in White Sands on the southwest coast of England to Telehouse in London, a "carrier hotel", and in the U.S., from AC1's Brookhaven cable station in Shirley, Long Island to a "carrier hotel" in New York City. Carrier hotels serve as the termination points for transatlantic traffic. The major carriers interconnect with these centers in order to transport traffic onward to its destination. ION, a 50-50 joint venture, draws on Metromedia Fiber Network's planned extensive fiber optic infrastructure in the U.S. and Racal's infrastructure in the U.K. to provide AC-1 with fully managed land-based links between cable landing stations and points of presence in London and New York City. "We are in the unique and enviable position of being the only company with the network capabilities to supply the backhaul for AC-1 in both the U.K. and the U.S.," said Vincent A. Galluccio, President of ION. "Our goal is to become the one-stop shop for carriers' international broadband service needs and fully managed network solutions. This contract highlights just one of many unique capabilities that separates ION from other transatlantic networks." In a separate agreement with affiliates of Global Crossing, ION has acquired rights for multiple STM-1 connections over the AC-1 cable, which will serve as a portion of the ION transatlantic backbone. In addition, ION will have the option of securing capacity into Europe via AC-1's landing points in Germany and the Netherlands. The ION joint venture represents the first stage of a strategy for expanding Metromedia Fiber Network's reach and services into the heart of European business communities while accomplishing the same goal for Racal in the U.S. ION will offer high bandwidth capacity at very competitive prices and services to the transatlantic carrier market. The initial service offering will include resilient fiber optic-based, international bandwidth capacity. The managed service portfolio will be expanded to cover transatlantic LAN interconnection and ATM services.
