That is irrelevant. Like you stated, the technology was emergent - nobody knows what the market would have ultimately chosen (actually we do, but lets exclude MSFT for now). How is it that NSCP was the one chosen to be assisted by the government? How do we know that I would not of developed a breakthrough marketing model that would have catapulted me to the top. How do you know that Spyglass would not have made a resurgence with a superior business model? A rebirth of Air Mosaic? The government is simply picking sides. The most excaberating point is that they are not doing it arbitrarily, but gravitating to the heftiest lobbying dollar, currently spent by the NOISE.
