Poland is lit up at night. Am new to the thread, but have an interest in investing in Eastern Europe. A few months ago in a French magazine, there was a satellite photo of Europe taken very early in the morning. The thesis of the associated article was that the amount of light could be associated with third shift factory output. [That is probably less true in urban areas.] France was lagging behind. It looked to me like the greatest overall non-urban light came from Poland. I am interested in knowing if there are any ADRs or funds specific to Poland. I have looked at the Central European Equity Fund (CEE), but it has most of its investments in Germany, and that is not my target. Would also be interested in learning about direct purchase of foreign stocks through U.S. brokers vs. foreign brokers. Do direct purchasers of foreign stocks owe foreign capital gains taxes when they are sold? For instance, I once asked about opening an account with a Canadian brokerage house, and they told me that I would owe Canadian taxes on my profits.
