Sprint, France Telecom, others eyeing Brazil's Telebras privatization

BRASILIA, May 19 (AFP) - US-based Sprint Corp. applied Tuesday for
access to the data rooms of the 12 holding companies that make up
Brazil's Telebras telecom giant, to be fully privatized July 15,
Communications Minister Luis Carlos Mendonca de Barros said.

France Telecom, Telecom Italia SpA, MCI Communications Corp, Portugal
Telecom, Telefonica de Espana SA and the Brazilian company Lightel have
already gained access to the data rooms.

The companies will formalize their interest after reviewing details on
eight holding companies for mobile telephony, three for fixed
telephony, and Embratel, a specialist in long distance telephony.

The information will remain available until June 6, one week after the
offer of the sale of Telebras is published on May 29.

The minister said that the number of interested parties surpassed
initial expectations.

And Mendonca de Barros said rights to provide local and long-distance
service would go on sale "before the end of the year," with a call for
bids to be released a day after Telebras is privatized.

Brazil's telephone system, which has some 15 million lines throughout
the country, once privatized should offer 40 million lines in 2000 and
50 million by 2005, according to government figures.

The only thing that this rise in price means is.....that there are more buyers speculating on this stock, and that the MM's don't want to get caught with their pants down if the news is very good. There is STILL no reason to INVEST in this stock.
