[SOLUTIONS] 'IEE SHOWS SMEs HOW TO BEAT THE MILLENNIUM BUG

A new 53 page booklet published by the IEE, 'Year 2000 problems in machinery',
looks at how small and medium sized companies can manage the risks posed by
possible Year 2000 failures in equipment and machinery.

Just because a company doesn't rely on computers in its day to day business doesn't
mean that it's immune to the threat of the date change from 1999 to 2000. Embedded
systems used to control the operation of plant, machinery and equipment that are vital
to business may be just as prone to the millennium bug, and companies that depend
on vulnerable machinery could find themselves in trouble.

The problem won't wait until the Year 2000. Today, companies that can't prove that
they are implementing an effective Year 2000 programme may have trouble obtaining
insurance cover against millennium bug risks, auditors may wish to qualify their
accounts, and banks may lend only to companies which they believe will be viable
after 2000.

Failure to take sufficient action or leaving it too late may also be regarded as
dereliction of duty by the board of management and by directors individually, and may
even constitute gross negligence.

The new publication represents the latest phase of the IEE's on-going campaign to
raise awareness of the millennium bug in industry, and particularly of the threat to
embedded systems.
