Hi Bruce,
Naturally we add the cash from the dividend to the cash reserve. That's a big reason it gets so high so fast. Both MRK and DD were purchased as Dow Dogs. They grew quite a bit without any AIMing. When I was supposed to sell them they still looked like good investments and I hated to part with them. MRK has gone from 37 to 120 in 2 1/2 years. DD has gone from 39 to 80 adjusted for splits in less than 18 months. I would have done better with both with Buy and hold having had very few buying opportunities and lots of sells. It is also true however that with AIM I have reduced my exposure to risk by about 40%.
One of the things I am thinking of doing is having the dividends reinvested. Now that I am a golden ager I have a little more time to keep track of things. I'll have to think that one through a little more.
