John,

Actually, I believe that the FINAL April numbers will likely show an upturn in both bookings and shipments compared with the March FINAL numbers. It will take another couple months before the laggards finish reporting their numbers giving us that more complete picture.

Mason,

ISI built the stepper that allowed the Univ of Texas to demonstrate 0.07æm features a couple months ago. They also have a contract with Bell Labs to turn Scalpel into a product which can be marketed and sold.

Andrew Vance has been very keen on the company for years, eagerly awaiting its IPO. I guess he's not going to get that opportunity.

Several comments have been made about UTEK and ISI on the UTEK, General Lithography and Stock Swap threads during the past 3 weeks.

Ian.

I guess this has been commented on before, but I find it interesting that shipments have exceeded BtB for the previous 3 months. Is this normal, or does that show that lead times are shrunking? Or perhaps a different quality of sales as less new fabs are started and more equipment is being upgraded.

Regards,

Mark

Also noticed SFAM got an upgrade from Alex Brown.

<< Removing the effect of the three-month averaging, this means that bookings in the month of April were about 7.5% less than in January. >>

John, I don't understand how you got this number. It looks like about a 20% drop to me. How are you doing the math?

I'd be delighted to hear that bookings January-April are down only a few points, but I do want to point out that the news on the front end is a little lower, and the figures from VLSI are considerably grimmer.

On the other hand, there is some ray of hope in the high shipment rate for April and concomitant tiny drop in total bookings. Let's hope the figure for bookings is actually holding fairly steady -- if so, the BTB at least ought to pop back up as soon as shipments slow. Let's get the bad earnings out of the way.

In other news, I saw today that SFAM has trimmed its workforce by 12%.
