Starowl,

>Adler's retirement last fall was perhaps not as bad for the company as you suggest. Saviers has been CEO for a couple of years.

That's true - Adler gave up CEO but retained CoB for several years. I suspect that he cast a pretty long shadow, though.

>Adaptec's market isn't the desktop and I don't think UDMA replaces SCSI in the server market.

UDMA certainly does not replace SCSI on servers, but the server TAM is much smaller than than the desktop. If desktop was not a market, sub $1K PCs would not have hurt ADPT any. Even losing a few points of share in the DT market would multiply out to a big number.

> What do you suppose Adler would have done in the current business climate?

Don't know. How much of the problem was climate? I have to suspect that somebody got distracted last summer/fall, and missed something in the numbers.

>Can you provide any sense of how Adaptec employees feel about the business?

I know some have left. Adaptec relied heavily on options to build employee loyalty. Considering that the stock is at a three-year low, and is still $4+ under the repricing, I suspect that options are not a big factor these days... And after seeing people get layed-off, I'm sure that there's a lot of thinking going on...
