I2, Ascend at 23 had a thread of people and I might add that I toss my 2 cents in to join the herd that Ascend's prospects were bleak and thing could go way lower. I still bought in the end. People that are at a loss in a stock have a different opinion than people who have lots of profit to boast about. The thread mood is very poor as an indicator unless you view it as contrarian. When the mood is horrible, that well might be the buy indicator. The inaccurate statements about the company and the products on the Adaptec thread by some also shows much about the quality of the posting.

Why there is no discussion about the market for SCSI and Firewire is mystifying considering it is the key to understand some of the important markets of this company.

USB has a maximum throughput of 12 Mbps. This is pathetic and worthless for anything except low-end consumer applications.

Firewire comes in 3 flavors; 100 Mbps, 200 Mbsp, and I can't recall the 3rd. This is being supported by Microsoft; pushed and financially incentivized by Microsoft. Why? Video applications. Microsoft has backed away from USB and is fully pushing Firewire, which by the way was started by Apple back in the mid-80s. They sure had the vision! Firewire's features are the only technological interface standard that will meet the next generation applications. Microsoft understands this; it isn't rocket science to see what is coming and soon. It will be Firewire, not USB that solves the limitations of computer connected peripherals. Firewire allows less in number then USB, but you can have multiple Firewires in one computer as I understand it. It will be difficult to ever hit the limitations; I can't imagine a situation for any but extreme special case situations in industrial applications.

Considering that SCSI now is in 40 Mbps to 80 Mps flavors. Also and this is very important; Firewire will have SCSI performance elements built into it. UDMA and USB are not going to impact this market significantly. I would assume that Firewire will overtake SCSI and Adaptec will still be right there all the way.

Why isn't there a discussion about Firewire? PCI card support is now available except that a bios support and products using it must appear. Until then, SCSI keeps on and SCSI will still be around co-existing with Firewire. It might well remain for a decade in one way or another. The predictions are that Firewire will break on the products front in 1999; about one year from now. I forget the estimates, but there will be a significant number of products on the market with this capability.

I believe Windows 98 has limited Firewire support built into it.
