Hi Sword; Fascinating thread; About that gyroscopic force, would it be partly eliminated (in an automobile) by mounting the engine with the axis of rotation vertical?

I'm an EE type, please forgive my ignorance... But would gyroscopic forces be responsible for the incredibly high wear rates that the old rotating cylinder WWI aircraft engines (i.e. Folker Triplane) had? I read somewhere that they required overhaul after something like 20 hours of use, and the great aces insisted on always flying with a new engine, fresh from the factory.
