Now listen carefully. GSCO can be the MM displayed as the one posting the ask on your Level II ALL DAY. And ALL DAY can go by without it making ONE SINGLE SALE, while other MMs are making the sales based on the price displayed by GSCO on your Level II, or mine, for that matter.

If you took off your blindfold and stopped trying to justify the cost of your Level II to yourself, you would understand that this is the truth.

Yes, my hypothetical is an extreme, and unlikely situation. But I made it so, to make it clear.

The main point is this. Your Level II tells you about who is displaying bid and ask prices. But it tells you NOTHING about who is actually making deals at those prices.
