A sindicated article in the Seattle Journal newspaper speculates that Intel's moves to license their slot 1/PII architecture will likely not be nearly enough to stop the justice department from filing an anti-trust action aimed at forcing Intel to open up their proprietary PC architecture to competition. Even without a direct license from Intel, IDT can manufacture slot 1/PII compatible uPs at IBM because IBM is fully licensed. An anti-trust action may change the perception among analysts and investors about the vulnerability of Intel's competitors caused by a shift away from socket 7 and low-end agressiveness. It would help to loosen the "Fear" factor Intel holds on the industry and will be a black eye on their image.
How much this translates into increased awareness and sales by consumers is only guesswork - probably not a bid direct impact, just a loosening of the stranglehold. The suit is expected sometime next month.
