Rudedog, I was referring to channels in the generic sense -- not specifically with regard to computers. This general concept of "service" has always been one of the economic rationales behind channels. In a sense, we end up with a bundled product.

Here's an example. I wanted to buy some stereo equipment, and walked into a local store that was offering the stuff I wanted, but at too high a price. When I asked why I should pay more to get the stuff from him his response was "we provide a lot of free service and advice". While this particular particular example is trivial and fraught with problems, it does underscore the point. The VARs (like HBOC for example) do add value, and their role is easy to understand. But what "value" to the customer does Ingram Micro add other than LCL ordering?
