In the Second World War the Russians alone lost about 30 million people to which add some six million Jews, etc. in concentration camps. That gets us up to about 36 million. I think Stalin did in several tens of millions. Then there was the Spanish Civil War with a million or two. Nobody knows how many millions have died in China in this century as a result of fighting. The Vietnam War or wars must have accounted for a million deaths. This is before we start totalling everyone killed in the First World War, or any of the Allied or Japanese deaths in World War Two. Right this minute people are dying regularly in the Sudan from fighting and starvation caused by fighting. Then there are the massacres elsewhere in Africa. And I forgot the Korean War. I haven't even mentioned anything in the Western Hemisphere either. Or the Iraq-Iran wars. Or the extermintion of Armenians and Kurds.

I am afraid that 100 million is terribly low as an estimate.

I left our India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan also.

The total United States losses in wars in the century still do not equal those in the Civil War.

As George Orwell said about atrocities, the really bad thing is that they actually happen.

"After two thousand years of mass / We've got as far as poison gas." wrote Thomas Hardy during WWI. In WWII gas was only used on helpless victims. I keep fearing that nuclear weapons will be used for the same purpose--just to exterminate large numbers of people.

Like you, I also expect that sooner or later some terrorist group will get themselves a Hiroshima-sized fission bomb.
