The masses are not calling out for a ban on knives because knives have many other uses besides killing people. It would be really difficult to function without knives for cooking, for example. Guns, on the other hand, have once function, and that is to kill. Regardless of the underlying causes, the recent school massacres could not have happened without very powerful weapons. A child could conceivably kill one classmate with a knife before being overpowered, but no more. With assault weapons, many children can be killed in a matter of a few seconds.
