The Chronicle is full of Stalinists? This is news to me!!! I think their editorial policy is fairly liberal, but their columnists range all the way from wonderful compassionate free thinkers and humanists to the right of Attila the Hun.

After I wrote that post to you, it did occur to me that the columnist, Joan Ryan, segued from one source of statistics to another. Do you find the statistics themselves unbelievable? To me the important thing is that this society is spinning wildly out of control with heavily armed children who commit mass murders. Do you disagree with this part of the column? Maybe we should start there.

I think I am going to emphasize what I believe is important about this quote from the column. I think people may be skimming over it, not getting quite the full impact:

"According to a 1996 Police Foundation poll, Americans privately own between 190 million and 220 million firearms. So it's not surprising that, according to another study, THE OVERALL FIREARMS DEATH RATE AMONG CHILDREN 14 AND YOUNGER IS 12 TIMES HIGHER IN THE UNITED STATES THAN IN 25 OTHER INDUSTRIALIZED NATIONS COMBINED. In real numbers, 14 children in America are killed with guns every day, and four times as many are treated for gunshot wounds. About 400 children die every year in unintentional shootings."
