Alex,

I used to work with a crusty old security guard, a retired cop. His theory was that criminals came to California to commit crimes because our prisons were so cushy and hospitable. I think there may have been a lot of truth in what he said.

As I alluded to earlier today on this thread, I don't care about punishment, rehabilitation, therapy, or any of the rest of it. Let 'em have their bigscreen TVs, weight rooms, and other accouterments. I would tend to protest the Internet terminal, however, for what I hope would be obvious reasons. All I care about is that these people who have shown an inability to play fair in society be kept where they cannot do it again.

As for prisoners' rights, what I learned way back when in school in California is that along with that felony conviction comes the loss of the rights enjoyed by most other citizens. Do any of us remember what or who changed that?

Over the next few days I'll try to come up with some more information on Pelican Bay and the Secure Housing Unit.
